Procrastination Kills Momentum
By Dan & Suzie Potter
It may sound a bit dramatic but your PROCRASTINATION is slowly killing your MOMENTUM.
We believe your life was created on purpose for a purpose. But when you allow fear, perfectionism, and lack of motivation to distract and stop the progress . . . then your ideas, goals and dreams are sabotaged by YOU! The best version of you is never realized.
The truth is procrastination is not your friend. It is actually you, consciously or subconsciously desiring to feel good right now. YOU give yourself permission to avoid the hard road and take the detour, which means you are unable reach what you truly desire.
Here’s the thing, your procrastination is the reason you are not already celebrating success around losing weight, writing your book, applying for that job, running that marathon or a hundred others things that you wish for.
This year we are focusing on our momentum, thus we must spotlight our giants and fight our procrastination everyday. Sometimes we stop the killer and march forward, while on other days we wonder off and our momentum dies. Sadly, sometimes we even get comfortable in being stuck.
But over the past few months we have discovered and put into action these 7 STEPS TO OVERCOME PROCRASTINATION. We must speak out that will enable us to intentionally slay the giant every time.
- Recognize the Killer - You! You embrace your stress, anxiety and fear. You must take responsibility for your detour and refuse to allow your giant to alarm and stop you. Say: “I am killing my momentum".
- Speak Life - Now that you have taken responsibility, let it go. Say: “I am not a PROCRASTINATOR” (replace it with "I procrastinate"). It is not who you are, do not let it be your identity. Now move forward.
- Break Tasks into Smaller Pieces - Change your overwhelming task to an over-capable moment as you break it into smaller, more manageable pieces. This will make it easier to get started and can help you feel more in control. Try to break it down into something you can do in 5 or 10 minutes. Say: “Oh, I can do that”.
- Set Goals and Deadlines - Embrace your timeline by setting specific goals and deadlines that will help you stay motivated and on track. Make sure your goals are realistic and achievable. Say: “Here is what I am doing, the location and when I am doing it” (what, where & when).
- Eliminate Distractions - Do an inventory of your distractions. Is it your phone, game, show, friend, hobby or social status that is distracting you? YES! So take action and limit and eliminate your procrastination triggers. Say: “You will have to wait until I am finished with my important progress”.
- Reward Yourself - Create a reward system for yourself for after you complete a task. Say: "I can now enjoy my phone, game, show, friend, hobby, or social status” (make sure it is a healthy reward in line with your momentum). Better yet, take yourself on a life-giving walk.
- Practice Self-Compassion - Don’t beat yourself up if you do procrastinate again. Instead, practice self-compassion, forgive yourself, remember that everyone struggles with procrastination at times and move forward again. Say: "I celebrate all by success so I will not dwell on one fail.” (Only allow yourself to procrastinate once, then back to your forward momentum!)
Procrastination is a difficult habit to break, but with effort and commitment, it is possible to overcome it and find your momentum. By understanding the causes of procrastination and implementing the 7 STEPS to overcome it, you can become more productive and achieve your goals. Remember this is your battle for you, speak to yourself and the giant and stop your killer.
